Kathmandu: The death of 469 people has so far been confirmed following the devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 977 people are still missing in the flood. Dr. Dharmaraj Upreti, Executive Chief of the Authority, said while speaking to the media on Friday that 3,253 people have so far been rescued alive from the flood-affected areas.
Of those rescued, 500 people were evacuated from a tunnel of a hydropower project on Thursday alone. Dr. Upreti said that several people are still believed to be trapped inside the tunnel and that rescue efforts are continuing.
Three helicopters were mobilized early Friday morning to accelerate the rescue operation. The Authority said that “lifting drones,” capable of carrying loads of up to one tonne, are being used to deliver food supplies to areas where road networks have been disrupted. Teams from the Nepal Army and Nepal Police have been deployed at various locations for body recovery and management, rescue operations, and assessment of immediate needs. Arrangements have also been made to supply fuel for helicopters from the Nuwakot station.
According to the Authority, the highest number of recovered bodies have been reported in Chitwan, with 178 deaths, followed by 110 in Nawalparasi East. Other districts have reported 44 deaths in Gorkha, 37 in Nuwakot, 33 in Dhading, 28 in Tanahun, 27 in Nawalparasi West, and 12 in Rasuwa. Identification has become challenging in some locations because only human remains have been recovered.
A significant number of security personnel and government employees are also among those missing. The missing include 45 Nepal Army personnel, 28 Nepal Police personnel, 13 Armed Police Force personnel, 15 employees of the Customs Office, and four employees of the Immigration Office. In addition, 161 civilians from Rasuwa and one civilian from Nuwakot have been reported missing.
Seventy-three people injured in the flood are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals. The Authority said arrangements are being made to provide immediate oxygen to 17 injured people in the Betrabati area.
Around 100 people in the border area of Uttargaya, Dadagaun and Kispang rural municipalities, and another 150 people at Liringe School, are reported to be safe. Efforts are underway to transport them to safer destinations by taking them across the Trishuli River.
Dr. Upreti also said that food supplies have been arranged for people staying at the 216-megawatt Trishuli Hydropower Project, while bodies recovered along the riverbank are being managed.
The Authority stated that all state mechanisms have been mobilized around the clock for disaster management and response.
