KATHMANDU — The Kathmandu District Court has ordered a restriction on the sale or transfer of a helicopter owned by Mustang Helicopter Pvt Ltd, a company linked to the late celebrated mountaineer Nirmal Purja, popularly known as "Nimsdai."
The restriction was placed after the company failed to pay Rs 114 million in compensation awarded to homeowners whose property was destroyed in a massive cylinder explosion linked to Purja's trekking agency.
Following rumors that the helicopter was being put up for sale after Purja's tragic death on Pakistan's Broad Peak on August 1, the Office of the Company Registrar officially informed the court via a letter dated September 29, 2026, that the asset has been frozen. Company registry records indicate that the shares linked to the helicopter are held under Nimsdai Ltd London.

The Core of the Dispute: The 2022 Kapan Explosion

The legal battle stems from an incident on September 21, 2022, in Ram Mandir, Lasuntar, located in Kapan, Kathmandu.
A two-and-a-half-storey reinforced-concrete house—owned by Tanka Ghising and Dalmu Kittar Ghising—was completely flattened after an unauthorized cache of LPG and oxygen cylinders exploded. The property had been rented out as an office space to Elite Himalayan Adventure Pvt Ltd, an expedition company associated with Purja.

Double Court Rulings and Current Status

Despite initial verbal and written promises by the company to cover the damages, the Ghising family was forced into a grueling multi-year legal battle, appealing to local authorities, the Home Ministry, and the Prime Minister's office.
* The Verdict: The Kathmandu District Court ordered Elite Himalayan Adventure to pay Rs 114 million in damages.
* The Appeal: The Patan High Court subsequently upheld the district court's decision.
* Supreme Court Battle: While the Ghisings are pushing for the enforcement of the judgment (which led to the freezing of the helicopter asset), the defendants have challenged the rulings at the Supreme Court, where the final battle rests.

Sitting Lawmaker Named as Co-Defendant

The case also carries political weight. Alongside Purja, other directors of Elite Himalayan Adventure are named as co-defendants. Among them are Mingma Tenji Sherpa and Mingma Gyabu Sherpa (Mingma David). Mingma Gyabu Sherpa is currently a proportional representative lawmaker for the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) representing the Taplejung district.
