Indian airline captain Smit Machchhar is being globally credited with saving the lives of 174 people on board a Flydubai jet after surviving a violent stabbing attack by his co-pilot mid-flight.

The incident occurred on Flight FZ1073 en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to aviation authorities, the co-pilot—an Omani national—stabbed Captain Machchhar in an apparent bid to take control and crash the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The plane plunged thousands of feet in less than two minutes and transmitted emergency hijacking codes.

Despite sustaining severe injuries and bleeding heavily, Captain Machchhar heroically fought back. He managed to maintain situational awareness and alert the cabin, allowing crew and passengers to rush the cockpit and subdue the attacker. Assisted by off-duty Flydubai pilots traveling as passengers, the aircraft was brought under control and made a safe emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
